SIZE | 15-25’ ht, though there are smaller cultivars available. Is usually a multi-stem tree. A few cultivars are small enough to be considered a shrub. |
FOLIAGE | Green, glossy leaves during the growing season. Usually one of the last plants to leaf out in the spring. Fall color – Excellent. Yellow, orange and red can be on the same tree. |
BARK | Smooth grey bark exfoliating to reveal shades of tan, and sometimes a deep cinnamon. Quite beautiful. |
FLOWER | White, pink, red and purple cultivars are available. Extremely showy panicles, 6-8” long and wide, appearing in late summer. |
FRUIT | Small, round capsules persisting through the winter. |
GROWING CONDITIONS | Prefers Full Sun. Will tolerate part shade, but may not bloom as well, and will have a bit more open habit. |
FAVORITE CULTIVARS | ‘Natchez’ for white flowers and cinnamon bark. ‘Miami’ for deep pink flowers.. |
NOTES | Deer resistant. Excellent as specimen or in a small group. We are on the northern cusp for this tree, therefore, do provide protection from winter winds. |
